The child stands as a link to the man. Reflected in the child's eyes we see all that the man is. When in the course of a man's life he deals with great hardship, it leaves an indelible mark on his soul. The child inherits the blemish, but learns quickly what he must do to live with it. Later, grown and in his father's place, the child, now a man, incognizant of the inherited mark, struggles with his own difficulty. Unknowingly, the man draws on the experience of his father for guidance. The mark evolves, ready to be passed again.
